Fred, I think you mean inseminated, right?  Simply because the mare is 
inseminated does not necessarily mean the mare is impregnated.  That's why most 
repro vets inseminate over two days and ultrasound or palpate for ovulation.  
They 
also may give shots to promote ovulation.  It takes about 14 - 16 days to 
ascertain that the insemination was successful.  

I've had plenty of success catching mares on their first cycle with AI.  I 
also have had plenty of disappointment about not catching a mare on the first, 
second, and third cycle, even though everything looked great from the 
reproductive end.  I only wish it was so easy with AI all the time.
