I didn't mean to imply that we would not use AI- We breed at least one mare AI every year. But I am learning a few questions to ask...

How many mares has the stallion impregnated AI?
How far away were the mares?
In how may heat cycles typically?
In addition to asking questions of the vet collecting.

A mare can be bred AI who is in the same barn as the stallion- to reduce the risk of contamination, infection, or risk of injury some mare owners will only breed AI even if the stallion is standing right there- However this is much different than shipping across the country. Our vet is excellent, he also breed racehorses and has tons of experience. He has bred one of our mares in the middle of the night because that was when the shipment came in and the mare was ready. He always checks the quality of the semen upon arrival. Some mares will breed on marginal semen- some need it to be top notch... sometimes the extender used can make a big difference. I would breed to a newly AI licensed stallion if the stallion owner was willing to take on some of the risk- for example- if the mare gets bred then the mare owner assumes the cost of the collection and shipping- if the mare does not get bred then the stallion owner will assume these costs- the mare owner will still have to pay for the insemination and ultrasounds etc. We have a stallion will be collected and tested this year. Because I have been breeding my mares AI, I know how the mare owners experience can be. It is easy for a mare owner to become discouraged by the additional costs and risks of breeding AI, but it allows for a wider stallion pool- especially if you live a great distance from many stallions and have mares that are used heavily during the breeding season.

We had semen shipped from Pat Wolfe (Prydarson) in Canada to us.
I met the shipment at the FedEx facility when it arrived and within 2 hours
our mare had been impregnated.

Our vet, on this end, is extremely experienced with AI. He works with a
large thoroughbred breeder who has semen shipped in all the time.

As was mentioned, the biggest factor towards a successful AI are the vets on
both ends.
I will not hesitate to AI again.
