The footing in the arena (whether inside or outside) probably is not something that would be difficult for a barefoot horse to walk on. For competition, that might be an interesting question. I have a subscription to The Horse's Hoof, and more and more competitors are participating with either barefoot horses, or with horses wearing hoof boots - and winning - especially in endurance.
