as someone who made the mistake of letting her well meaning but not knowing
hubby overfeed their fjord two winters ago, i know personally how much work it
is to get them back in shape.

with oz i have used many of the techniques listed. he has a grazing muzzle
and when he was at home, he wore it every day. he learned the best technique to
get the maximum effect of the tiny hole in the bottle. when he didn't wear the
muzzle, he didn't leave the paddock. period.

when i moved him to the barn we are at now, at first she wanted to pasture
him with other horses, but i made it very clear.....no grass, no round bales.
so
he has his own private turnout. very nice, lots of trees for shade, but
almost no grass. what there was he has already eaten, and because of all the
shade,
it doesn't grow.

he gets fed a couple of flakes of good hay twice daily, and the days i am
there he gets a cottage cheese carton full of grain with his supplements.

when i started riding him again, we went slowly, both because of his weight
and my knee. it was good for both of us. it's taken a year, but he finally
looks normal again, a defined shoulder, no crest, an indent in front of his
hip,
and the valley along his spine and over his butt is gone. if i can brag, he
looks wonderful. i was totally ashamed at how he got so overweight, but i know
it's never going to happen again. we now ride regularly, are learning to canter
together, and he can go forever....except, of course, he reads the clock and
knows when his thinks his lesson time is over.

laurie, and oz.....what can i say about this guy that i haven't already said
:)
