We live in Western Colorado and in our area we are not prone to floods, fires,
earthquakes, or tornadoes but we have lightning storms as well. This past May
one of our large cottonwood trees was struck by lightning and luckily it didn't
catch fire (it is close to the barns) but instead exploded out the bottom of
the trunk. The noise was frightening as it sounded like a bomb and I saw the
flash out of the kitchen window. It took us a few minutes to realize what
happened and then rushed outside to check on the horses who were all okay but
eerily quiet. This made us think that we definitely need an evacuation plan.
Halters hang outside the stalls but until the info from the Australian
Firefighter we never thought about the nylon halter's ability to melt. We will
be changing that ASAP.
This whole emergency preparedness plan got us to thinking about what other
disasters could affect us. We live by the railroad tracks where trains haul
"who knows what" and if there should be a derailment of hazardous chemicals we
would need to evacuate then as well.
I encourage everyone to think outside the box when thinking about disasters
and get a plan in order. I know we are!
    Dianne
