It's at about this time of year when the nights get especially longer and colder, that I can occasionally lose myself searching for fjord stuff on ebay. Because of my background in fine art printing + lithography I especially like collecting printed ephemera relating to fjordhorses,(books, prints, cards etc.) but I don't really need any more ;~ )) ...well tonite i seemed to have struck a gold -mine of sorts. click on this link for this Ebay search results page page:

If you have the time to open a few of the B+W postcards listed, do so. I know; many of these cards are the same: yet another narrow, scrawny(compared to our plush models!) patient fjordhorse hooked to a kariol waiting at the wharf for the steamer, or at the hotel for the tourists to come out after breakfast. But bear with me and look at this one in particular: *norway norge, GUDVANGEN i Sogn. it's amazing to see all of those horses jammed together patiently waiting... Look at the pair in the foreground. The off-horse has turned his head around at the intruding photographer, and seems to be the only living creature taking notice of the camera. What a gorgeous face. This is another beauty, and is also 'packed' with horses on a drive in front of a hotel: * norway OLDEN-NORDFJORD Fra Brixdal. It must have been quite the scene getting everyone up and into the carts, and then I bet they almost went down the road in one long procession, as from the looks of all of the other cards, there really wasn't that much passing or turning room.

There are a couple of interesting artworks too: a primitive painting of a fjord pack horse at the top of the page, followed by a wood carving depicting, what else but fjordies with their heads down eating! Last on the page, a beautiful litho print by the dutch draughtsman/artist, Eerelman. (Here is a link to the same vendors website showing other horses in Eerelman's 'Paarddenrassen' series: http://tinyurl.com/ywnbtl) It's interesting that when I did a seach of other original prints in the series, the fjordhorse was seemingly a bargain at about half of what the others were going for. I wonder why? Is anyone familiar with this print? I have seen it before and often wondered if it was a rendering of the famous stallion 'Rosendalsborken'. Anyone want to give an opinion?
Oh well, enough of my wanderings for tonight. Hope you enjoy the images.
