I just found this little mention in a story about Big Brown's bloodtests.



"Big Brown was pulled up by jockey Kent Desormeaux early in the stretch in
the Belmont. So far Dutrow has not come up with a physical reason for the
performance. Photographs have indicated that Big Brown was running with a
dislodged shoe on his right hind foot throughout most of the race."

I presume that a loose shoe could easily have been the reason he was
uncomfortable enough not run all out.  

So....there must be a form of boot...that could stay on for sure and be
comfortable.  Or, give the track conditions, why couldn't he run barefoot?
