A couple of years back, Joe was in the trailer when it came unhitched from
the truck and dropped him in the middle of the road. That same day (after
switching to another trailer), he managed to go around the front divider in
the
trailer, blast the door open (it was closed but not latched) and ran off. I
got him home from the clinic only by luring him into the trailer with a
bucket of grain. After that, he declined to trailer load.

My favorite trainer came down for a private session, and it was wonderful to
watch (I've since gotten to watch him do it many more times). The skill, or
savvy if you will, was well past my abilities. His complete calmness, his
incredible reflexes at changing up at just the right moment, and his stamina
were amazing. Joe never got flustered, and at the end pretty much said "oh,
if I get in the trailer I can just stand quietly - that's a good deal". The
trainer worked with me to make sure I could replicate, we left Joe alone for a
couple of hours and then came back to make sure Joe and I could still
manage, and we've never had another issue since. I lift the rope towards the
trailer, Joe hops on and stands quietly waiting for the butt bar.

Love that pony of mine - he keeps me hopping all the time.
