I'm sure that when this subject arose in the past it was concluded that
dapples are an inherited holdover from Arabians, the predecessor for many
horse breeds. In any case, it is an innate marker that randomly occurs and has
nothing to do with nutrition, other than they are more apparent at optimum
times of the year; not obvious with a winter coat. The natural phenomena of
"random selection" is why the occurrence genetically varies in siblings.
