I am interested in making a fly trap for deer and horse flies. I followed
these instructions which were posted this spring, but the darned thing
hasn't caught a fly in 3 days and the horses are getting eaten up.
(Though they do get under the deep barn overhang so are not sufferering)
It is very simple. Take a large black trash bag and fasten between two
T-posts. Put the wallpaper tray under the edge of the bag and fill it
with soapy water. I think the whole thing needs to be about 3 ft. off
the ground. The deer flies are supposed to hit the bag thinking it is a
meal & drop into the water to be drown or killed. As I said. I have
not tried it, but friends swear it works and at least the materials are
very inexpensive.
I have an 18" ball covered with a black plastic bag hung from side to
side with twine in a fence corner. The ball moves enticingly in the
breeze. There is a large pan of soapy water under it. So far, in 3 hot
and sweaty days, not one fly. The Fjord did go over and turned the water
over once.
When I look at the horse ball for sale for over $200, they have a trap on
the top where the fly goes up, instead of down. Does anyone have any
knowledge of which way a fly really goes?
Thanks for any help.
