Hi Robyn,
Supplements, or lack of, will not affect the mane stripe color that much.
Many brown duns have brown stripes in the mane and through their back.
Also, the stripe can be sun bleached, so you have to look hard at the roots.
The description of the Fjord colors at
http://www.nfhr.com/catalog/index.php?colors=1, states that the stripes for
a brown dun "are black, or dark brown." If Gaven is getting the normal,
recommended amount of minerals and vitamins, then the coat, mane, and hoof
condition will be good. If you are just feeding hay or just a small amount
of regular feed, then you need to add a good supplement like Accel or
something similar. Many of us feed 2 pounds a day of Triple Crown Lite or
Nutrena Lite instead of other feeds and supplements. I would ask your
farrier about the soft sole problem. It could be that a hoof dressing
should help, but without seeing the hoofs and your conditions, it is
impossible to tell. It sounds like Gaven and Lars have a great home!
Take care and Happy Fjording!!
