Well, my g. grandmother, Anna Cecelia, was the illegitimate daughter of a
married man and unmarried woman and lived in the Lofoten Islands in a
parson's home as the census tells me. Somehow, she ended up in Vardo,
Finnmark; married to a Vardo born fisherman who worked out of Bergen in the
Hanseatic League. They had nine children, the oldest a boy and all the rest,
girls. As you might imagine, they were very poor. My grandmother Constanza
Hildora, was the oldest girl. At some point, after their dad had died at
sea, the oldest boy went to America and ended up in the Red River Valley
area as a Norwegian bachelor farmer. Constanza arrived somewhat later on her
own and settled in the same area and married Peter Moen, whose family were
farmers from Hedmark. I would like to know more details but don't. Of her
seven younger sisters, another few came to America while four ended up in
the Oslo area after WWII. Vardo was occupied during the war and horrific
things went on there. So there is still much to learn.

A: We will be wearing traditional Norwegian bunads (costumes). One rider
will wear authentic Norwegian wedding clothing, including the magnificent
silver wedding crown on loan from the Vesterheim museum (in Iowa). All this
is especially meaningful to me -- I'm Norwegian and my grandmother emigrated
from Norway to America by herself in a great adventure more than
100 years ago.

So.... What is the story?

Gail
