My copy of Object-Oriented Actionscript for Flash 8 got here yesterday. I've been plowing through it and it's a great read so far. What I'm enjoying about it is the fact that things are being put into context. I would recommend this book to any aspiring developers who would like to follow the flow of application development in Flash. It's like looking over the shoulder(s) of Todd Yard and Peter Elst while they are planning and coding. I haven't even gotten to the design patterns and the case studies yet but the clarity of it is great and I decided to share that here since I know many of us on here have the concepts down and are looking for the right question to ask- with me the question is usually - "Hey, I think I understand this stuff but I'm a lone developer so would you mind if I just followed you through one of these Object-Oriented projects so that I can get a clearer picture of where I'm supposed to be using the various skills that I think I have". or just plain old "Am I doing this right?"
Hope that some others can get as much clarity out of it as I am getting thus far. To put it in context- IMHO the difference between this book and EAS2 which I love (now that my skillset has grown) is that it's a lighter read. Further along in my experience I keep my EAS2 with me at all times for when I'm stuck- but when I was oblivious to the concepts and anxious to get my OOP on - I was impatient and missed a lot of the goodness of the book because stuff that is a lifesaver now that I'm at work and stuck was kind of a hard read when I wanted to get started quick- DISCLAIMER- before I get flamed for insulting EAS2 let it be clear that I am not! That said I think that OOAFF8 is a different approach. I'm finding it to be gentler-more in the spirit of "Foundation ActionScript" than say "ASDG" plus I like pictures! I'm finished- back to my book!
