If aligning left, move all other objects to the right of the one you want as the reference object. If aligning top, move them below. And so on for bottom and right. For center, I've found the smaller object(s) must be placed within the horizontal and/or vertical limits of the largest object, which will then be the reference object. It would be nice if you could just designate the reference object, but I haven't found a way to do that.
