No built in methods I know of.  But quick and easy, is just to loop.
Something like:

        public function findStringItem(theArray:Array,
identifier:String):Number{
                var i:Number = theArray.length
                while (--i -(-1)) {
                        if(theArray[i] == identifier){
                                return i;
                        }       
                }
        }
