What you are seeing is that assigning an onPress and/or onRelease handler to a MC means that an contained subclips do not receive mouse events. What you need to do is create a movieclip at the same level as your buttons to be the clickable area, and assign the mouse functionality to that. It can be just a drag bar up top like a normal OS window, or it can be a solid rectangle BEHIND your buttons..
