They weren't stored locally, the array was declared outside of the onLoad event handler.

var myTxt:Array;

myMenuData.onLoad = function(success) {
   if (success) {
       myTxt = this.myVar.split(",");
   }
}

Allthough the above code is also not "best-practice" because of the scope change, it worked and the loaded variables were assigned
to the myTxt Array.
