1) What is a "mutator"? 2) Why are the children being coupled to the parent? I would recommend using event bubbling - dispatch from the children, the parent listens for it and does what it needs to do. Have the parent push data to the child if necessary, and then the child can do what it needs to do with that data from the parent. I wouldn't recommending doing it the other way around.
