I've done some digging and I can't find an easy way to tell.  I'll let you know if a way comes up but in the meantime I'll file an enhancement request for it.

Hey folks, quick question:

I know the mx:Loader has a complete event, which seems to fire whether or
not the asset being loaded actually existed (in other words, it thinks its
complete even if its returning a broken image icon).  Is there a status
event or some other way to know that the image wasnt really loaded?
