Actually, the sortDirection thing was mentioned by Nigel Pegg (aka Component Guru) in the "Flash MX 2004 ActionScript - Training from the Source" book. I tried it in Flex a while back and it worked - so I never worried or even verified if it's documented or not. Sorry if this caused confusion. Dirk.
