Something like this perhaps..

I'm assuming that the reason for the margin is to leave a gap around the 
edges. Lets say you want a 5 pixel gap.

<mx:Canvas id="outerCanvas">
<mx:Canvas id="innerCanvas" width="{outerCanvas-10}" 
height="{outerCanvas-10}" x=5 y=5 >

add other stuff here

</mx:Canvas>
</mx:Canvas>

Any good?

Maybe I've got the wrong idea about why you want the margin.
