I'd just override drawHighlightIndicator...

Here's an easy way:

Extend List

override protected function mouseOverHandler(event:MouseEvent):void
{
     var item:IListItemRenderer = mouseEventToItemRenderer(event);

     super.mouseOverHandler(event);

     if (highlightIndicator && item && isItemSelected(item.data))
     {
         clearHighlightIndicator(highlightIndicator, item);
     }
}
