Nice post.  Yeah, that is wierd; looks like a bug.  You can get around
it for now, by looking at the data instead:

public function handleTreeItemChange(event:ListEvent):void
{
      debugTextArea.text = "ListEvent's selectedItem: " +
testtree.selectedit...@label <mailto:testtree.selectedit...@label> ;
}
