A "item" in a datagrid represents a data point and is independent of how it is displayed. How a "item" is displayed is based on a ItemRenderer. So, what you want to go a googling on is:datagrid custom itemrenderer Unlike 2005 and Flex 1.5 days, you will find a plethora of results.
