Image extends SWFLoader which means it dispatches a complete event, When the complete event is dispatched your image finished loading.
you can use some sort of preloader/animation to make things look better. Or you can queue the images lading and only display them after all of them are loaded. Also depending on the number of images maybe load all of them upfront and only display after that. Check also for ContentCache in fx4.
