Randall is correct. I use ES6 along with Babel and Webpack happily with my React coding. If you want to dig in and get your hands dirty, check out Gluestick (https://www.drivenbycode.com/getting-started-with-gluestick/) . It is an excellent (IMHO) CLI tool for scaffolding out a React site to get started and learn how to use the platform.
