OK, I checked with the Player team and it is a known issue,
unfortunately it won't be fixed right now.  Here are the relevant notes
(FOL means Fact of Life):

For security reasons, we don't allow the player to query the keyboard
unless we know we have focus, in order to prevent key snooping of other
apps. On Windows, running in windowless mode, we don't have an HWND,
which makes it impossible to test whether or not we have focus. We can
test to see if our parent has focus, but our parent may contain an
arbitrary number of children, and we can't allow the player to snoop on
its siblings. So, for now, this bug is FOL.
