I think fscommand() still works (googling for it will yield plenty of info). setVariable() and getVariable() only worked with one of the major browsers, IIRC. There's also the Flex-AJAX bridge (http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Flex_Framework:FABridge).
