"Correct" is a matter of opinion.  There are many ways to get data into Flex and the original poster is asking about embedding FlashVars in html.  Therefore it'd be safe to assume the OP is working with a small amount of data that he wants to load initially along with the Flex app.  Using HTTPService is an extra round-trip and I'm sure the OP would not consider it "correct" for his situation (I certainly wouldn't).
