Thanks Alex, but I've got things working how I want now.

I just converted to UIMovieClip in FlashCS3 using the jsfl, then used 
untyped ref var and didn't cast the target object in Flex. e.g.

var dropTarget = event.currentTarget;

instead of

var dropTarget:UIMovieClip = UIMovieClip(event.currentTarget);

That allows me to keep things simple and use DrageEnter, DragOver, 
DragExit and DragDrop events for my dropTarget, and allows easy 
refactoring when I switch to Flex 3.
