Can you please explain exactly what you saw that made you believe that
setTextFormat() is a method of TextArea? If there is a documentation
problem, I would like to get it fixed so that others aren't similarly
confused.

setTextFormat is not a method of TextArea. setTextFormat is a method of
TextField. TextArea is not the same as TextField. TextArea is a Flex
control. TextField is a base Flash player control. TextArea uses a
TextField control internally. If you were to subclass TextArea you could
access the protected variable textField, which is the TextField control
within TextArea. Then you could call textField.setTextFormat from within
your extended class.
