TextArea is not the same as TextField. TextArea is a Flex control. TextField is a base Flash player control. TextArea uses a TextField control internally. If you were to subclass TextArea you could access the protected variable textField, which is the TextField control within TextArea. Then you could call textField.setTextFormat from within your extended class.
