[flexcoders] legend setstyle not working properly

I am trying to change the formatting for a Legend in Actionscript:

genericLegend.setStyle("direction", "horizontal");

But this does nothing, instead it lists the items vertically.  What is the 
proper way to do this in 
Actionscipt?
