I suspect that tax and shipping are going to come to more than the cost of
the connector no matter what I do. I recently bought a bunch of toggle
switches for a PDP-8 I was building and the shipping was as much as the cost
of all the switches. :-) So it probably doesn't matter if I order from
Newark or someone else who is cheaper.

Also, the crimp connectors are different for stranded and for solid
conductor UTP cable. Most Ethernet is solid-conductor 24AWG wire but the
stranded wire conductor has a greater diameter for the same AWG thus
requiring a different crimp connector. (I found that out by making a large
number of Ethernet patch cables using the wrong one and having to go back,
cut off, and reterminate every one.)

And the only reason I don't really want to make one out of an existing
flexible Ethernet cable is the lack of an electrostatic shield on the cable.
I have made cables that way but would prefer to have a cable that is better
shielded from RF pick-up. If the mic input was really differential then that
would be one thing but it is single-ended and so I think that an
electrostatic shield is a good idea.

Thanks for the pointers guys!
