I hear you, Bill, but, apart from poking your finger into the power supply, the only "disaster" that is going to befall a home computer is data loss. I could replace a CPU, a GPU, a power supply, even a whole system but my data are irreplaceable.
That being said, another HDD to create a RAID 1 array is a heck of a lot cheaper than another computer. Carbonite or other cloud backup systems are inexpensive and highly reliable, too. And remember, two computers...twice as many opportunities for failure.
