Scott, Incidentally, since you mentioned the CRAY computing power:
CRAY-1, Introduced 1976, $5M, 0.08 GFLOPS CRAP X-MP, Introduced 1982, $10M, 0.4 GFLOPS CRAY-2, Introduced 1985, $17M, 3.9 GFLOPS CRAY Y-MP, Introduced 1988, $3M?, 1.3 GFLOPS ... (time passes) CRAY X1, Introduced 2002, $2.5M+, 205 GFLOPS FLEX-6700: 121 GFLOP I looked up all the CRAY numbers fairly quickly so they are not exact -- also CRAY sells lots of configurations so the X1, for example, can be configured with 4096 processors (so take the 205 GFLOP number times 4096), but these systems are $40M+. A "fair" comparison is the single processor at 205 GFLOPS and $2.5M. The number we really care about in the DSP world is not GFLOPS, but GMACS. The Intel Core i7-2600 introduced in 2010 has about the same GFLOP number as the FLEX-6700, but substantially lower GMAC number as I recall.
