John - Like many of us, I try for the lowest value. I usually run about 120, not great but handles PSDR without any problems. Actually, values below 1,000 (if I remember correctly) should be workable. If necessary, PSDR will advise using level 1 or level 2 buffering. It is okay to run these, you just have a bit more latency.
If I had your situation I would use the radio, and poke at DPC when the bands are dead.
