Hi Scott, I ran into this when a firewire problem developed during an upgrade to Win8.
At first the problem presented as a software problem. After all, the hardware system had worked perfectly with WinXP Pro SP3 before the upgrade. During the upgrade process and the new installation of the PowerSDR 2.3.5 and associated driver the error message you described occurred. Dudley spent some time on the phone with me while he patiently led me through all the possible software causes. After we exhausted the possible software issues I discovered the firewire on the motherboard, which had worked previously, no longer worked. A PCI firewire card with a Texas Instrument controller chip solved my problem. Hope you find the solution for your system.
