Hi Steve,

We developed a new consumer based audio product where I work that updates
its software via internet connection. In our product when the customer
wants to check and download updates he/she selects "update" from the setup
menu... If there is a new update to the version the customer is currently
running, the system downloads and installs the update with no further action
required from the customer.

Dan,

As Tim mentioned, there are two key pieces to update -- the client software
and the radio. Today there is some give-and-take on which versions work
with each other. Today the Windows client software is a Windows installer,
so this will likely be distributed as before on a web page. SmartSDR
software for the radio is updated in a 2-step process: 1) files are
retrieved and placed on the radio, 2) the radio initiates an upgrade
process. Today, we push the files manually to our handful of test
customers, but the final process will be different. One possible scenario
is for the radio to automatically check for updates and download them or to
notify the client that an update exists and then upgrade at the client's
request. Considerably more complicated would be a mechanism where the
update files are somehow pushed to the radio via the client or another
mechanism such as a flash drive, CD in the client, etc.

Is there anyone who would be unable to upgrade a radio via a process where
the radio downloaded it's upgrade from the Internet? We'd prefer to spend
our time working on "radio features" rather than additional radio software
upgrade processes to support every conceivable situation.

Steve
