Just curious, do the big three anounce when and why they are discontinuing
their products?
In most products, companies do do not issue a press release (or a
message to its customer base that a product is being discontinued, nor
are they under any obligation to do so. Neal makes a good point (as do
many others in this thread) that usually the word gets out unless the
information is kept very secret and from most employees who could leak it.
I am reminded of when Pontiac was discontinued... GM did not really
announce it until after word had "escaped" through the trade and car
buff channels. A lot of dealers took a pounding on that one. The other
example is Honda, specifically with their motorcycles. Anybody who can
actually obtain advance information on (for example) the next year's
models and changes is either rare or non-existent.
Based on observations made here and the other forums, Flex and its crew
have been more forthcoming about changes and new stuff, especially when
compared with other ham radio companies. Sure, they all "pre-advertise"
new stuff before Dayton - no harm, no foul. Realistically, most
companies "retire" products or lines within relatively few years. After
several years, no company can afford to perpetuate any product, partly
due to costs, and partly due to changes in technology.
Meanwhile, the Flex 5000A will likely hold its value, as it remains one
of the best radios out there.
