Mike, This isn't the least expensive solution but I wanted something that would last and is bullet proof - RDL met that set of requirements!
At the office (control end) of the link, I haveĊ - RU-AFC2 which converts two balanced lines into unbalanced L+R channels into a pair of powered speakers. - RU-MLA2T Mic pre-amp to balanced line driver. Two inputs, two outputs - the outputs both drive the same balanced line (paralleled together) - one input configured with phantom power, the other not (so I can use both Electret and Dynamic mics as I choose. -RU-SH1 Stereo headphone amplifier that will drive Hi-Z (200 ohm) headsets or Lo-Z (8 ohms) with gain to spare. Takes L+R in via balanced line - this is in parallel with the RU-AFC2 above. At the remote end, I have a single RU-AFC2 - this takes the unbalanced stereo from the 5000 or 6700 speaker output and converts to the two balanced lines to the control end. It also takes one balanced line in (from the Mic pre amp) and converts it to unbalanced line level which goes to the Line IN on either the 5000 or the 6700. The CAT6 (or CAT5 wouldn't make any difference) twisted pair provides a great cable for the balanced lines - no hum audible even with all the gains cranked up. The PTT is simply the PTT from the rear panel of the 5000 or 6700 with a very long cable to the remote end. There is essentially no current on this PTT line so the two way ohmic loss on the cable is irrelevant - its probably about 10 ohms total given the line length I have. For PTT, I use eitherĊ the PTT on a Heil Mic, a Heil hand PTT switch or a LineMaster foot switch. At the radio end, I also have a RDL EZ-MXL4 4 channel stereo mixer which allows me to route audio from multiple radios onto the same stereo line feed to my office. The one thing you need to be careful of with multiple radios and the mixer is hum loops. Either transformer coupling OR big fat grounding between all components is a necessity. Hope this helps - I'll put a blog post together at some point as I get a lot of questions about the audio solution.
