I hear that the flea market at Dayton was a paradise for treasure hunters looking for old ham gear often called "boat anchors". If you spent all your Ham $$ on your SDR-1000, don't be sad. You can convert your SDR-1000 into a Boat Anchor with one simple technique.
If you are new to Ham Radio, or yearn to hear radio signals as they were heard in the 40's and 50's, read on. You can easily modify your PowerSDR Console settings and experience the wonder of yesteryear, the thrill of static crashes, the headache from audio driving your headphones into distortion, all without the sterility of Automatic Gain Control. Go to your front panel. Select AGC = FIXD. Go to Settings --> DSP --> AGC FIXED GAIN. Now crank that fixed gain up until you get the desired effect. On 80M tonight there is a pronounced lessening and enhancement of signals - a phenomenon often called fading. Fading will entertain and astonish you with it's intricate patterns of ear drum numbing loudness and then totally unexpected whispers of the same signal. This is REAL Ham Radio at it's best. Give it a try. You will be amazed at how you can craft and personalize your SDR-1000 experience. In my next installment you will learn how to mine your own Galena crystals, wind coils, bend brass, and do it all using the virtual reality of the PowerSDR Console! all the best, de Ken N9VV
