Just in case: I check whether a port exists by using
GetDefaultCommConfig() - if this returns nonzero then the port exists. COM1
to COM255 are valid. This is the only method of COM port detection which
really (really) works.

The COM ports listed are the ones available on your computer. If there
are none listed, then the software did not detect any available (I think
it checks COM1 through COM24).
