Frank Well, I don't think there is any problem in disagreements or any fears. This is just discussion as to how we get to a template, or blueprint for a team effort. Also what I say is not meant to convey any criticism for folks working on versions of a console with really neat free tools. Bob Cowdery's work is enthralling!
The Linux console would be a more 'for fun' or 'because we could' project. The reason we even have an SDR-1000 console is because you, Bob and Eric1 have worked as a team to provide the core and framework to which many others individually have made great contributions. It DID take you three as a team to get it to 'market'. In this case however it's only a little afraid. What IS needed is 'conformity'(doncha just hate it!). A structured > 'town'. What I'm pushing here is the idea that "Eric's console" should and will be a very different beast from "Jose's console" and even less recognizable in "Duane's console." Short form: the Linux SDR "console" will be more like a desktop environment than an application, more like KDE or Gnome than xemacs or the gimp. The simplest manifestations are probably browser-based, thanks to SWIG and php. *************** The problem here, as I see it, is we never quite get to a 'working console' with enough features and facilities to 'add on' by other folks. Individual efforts, with some parts missing and everyone waiting for the individual to get 'further along'. Not a criticism just not a product. *************** What's happening right now is that the infrastructure necessary to support an environment like this is growing up very quickly in terms of its abstract character. Far as I know, all the current efforts can be distributed across networked machines. That's as it should be. It determines a lot about how components have to be organized and interconnect. ************** Yep, it should form the basis for a specification, for the product, not the product itself. Once a team has the spec, then the project can move forward. ************** Nevertheless no number of willing expert hands can work together to build something before the design is clear. The design can't be stipulated or declared by fiat. It has to grow and evolve and be refined by hard knocks. We need many forks and blind alleys before we know enough to construct the right set of support machinery. ************* This is also true, but with some coordination, which Dan is trying to put together, the hard knocks and learning process falls on the group rather than one individual. Hard to have a baseball team, where 3 folks decide to play shortstop and no one is in the outfield. Or worse, only one player in the field and everyone else watching. ************* For myself, I am convinced that an SDR is properly embodied in an OODL. That's the path I will be following for the next few months, taking the existing components of jsdr, making them exposed and available via SWIG in a completely different programming environment. Lisp, if you must know. I am aware of at least one covert supporter for that strategy, so fooey on you parenthesephobes. Herding cats, etc. ************* Big smile! I don't know many of the acronyms, and also knowing you, this is probably a winner approach. However, it is your approach. I think I really just need to 'hand it over to Dan' he did propose a plan for at least getting started in discussion of a team approach. I am currently a non-linux person except for a marvelous boot and utilities disk, which allows me to boot a variety of Dell PC's build a network stack and Ghostem! ************* 73 Frank AB2KT
