Richard,

That is a very interesting approach. I didn't consider associating more
that one program with a predefined mode. Maybe the crux of the matter
is to do away with the predefined digital mode paradigm. By using a new
table in the database to store operating parameters and associate
specific VAC settings for those selections along with TX profile
settings.

Do something like this:

Take the three current digital mode only buttons (the digis and DRM) and
make them user-defined "operating mode profiles". You get to define the
name on the button. As an example you could name one of your operating
mode profiles as "MixW", which you could set as have a
modulation/demodulation mode of USB (all valid modes in the radio could
be selected here) and a check box for "VAC enabled" which in turn would
allow you to define the VAC parameters specifically for that selection.

Let's go one step farther. An additional configuration option for
user-defined "operating mode profiles" would allow you to associate TX
profile settings as well. I like using narrow TX filters for digital
modes and that could also be associated with the user-defined "operating
mode profiles".

But wait! You could allow the system defined modes (the top nine
buttons) to have the ability to associate TX profile settings with those
modes as well (just don't provide the VAC option).

While we are on a roll, let's go for broke....

Then apply a "band stack memories" type functionality to the
user-defined and system defined "operating mode profiles) where
repeatedly clicking on the button would rotate through 3 (or more)
settings for a single button. This way you could have 9 user-defined
"operating mode profiles".

Use a right click on the mouse over the button to access the modes
definitions.

I like this train of thought. Sleep deprivation spawns some creative
thinking sometimes.

Comments, opinions or criticisms?
(I'd love to hear Eric's thoughts on this.)

settings

Tim,

I agree completeky but I don't think you went far enough. The
selection should probably be keyed on the object external application
and not the mode of the radio. I find my self with two or three sstv
programs, two or three rtty, and several cw decoders. It would be
nice to be able to pull these up by application. In addition, I've
been running different applications for the same mode simultaneously
driven by the single sdr1000 vac source.

This could be done so that it would allow the user to configure the
sdr1000 for his external applications rather than limiting the choice
to two or three sdr1000 modes. Eliminate the DIGU/DIGL buttons
alltogether and make then into a user definable drop down menu
selector.
