Here is an article by Sinisa YT1NT which describes how the Orion AGC works and how to set it up. The Orion is close to the SDR in the way the RX works. The Orion uses a single conversion RX through a roofing filter before demodulation to 11 khz and then sending that signal to a DSP unit.
The SDR is direct conversion through a Tayloe detector and then IQ signals at 11 khz to a DSP unit (sound card). As such they share a good deal of homogeneity in their design philosophy, so reading some of the theory Sinisa discusses should give a good conceptual overview of how to adjust the SDR for a given band and a given set of band conditions.
