Hi Jon, I can tell you there is no difference in my CPU load between 1.6.3 and 1.8.0, or the latest SVN. Actually, the fascinating thing about the Flex programmers is that they keep adding features while from time to time reducing CPU load!
Anyway, I would just try it. If it works, great. If not, you just revert back to 1.6.3. Let us know how it goes.
