Evidently I overlooked a feature in the MS Mouse Intellipoint software setup menu under Buttons/Wheel Button that should be set to "None". The turns off the feature in the wheel that also lets it be used as a push button. Did that and the problem no longer exists. Thanks to all for your interest in helping.
