Actually the FLEX-5000 has just such a low power circuit, which is always
powered on. We have the ability to turn the radio off over the FireWire.
However, in order to turn the radio on over FireWire, we would have to keep
the FireWire processor, SDRAM, FLASH memory, and physical interface chip
active at all times. Those parts are not low power.

One thing we can consider it future software enhancements to put the radio
in a standby state for lowest power consumption. We can power down a number
of the chips through software but we would have to leave the FireWire
circuitry fully powered.

By the way, the radio draws around 12-13W when powered on in receive mode.
