I also built an AMD X2 4800 with 2GB of RAM but I used an MSI 
(micro-star international) MoBo.

I have 2 SATA II HD's in a RAID 0 configuration for speed

NO problems running the SDR-1000.  It is flawless.  I have seen up to 
16 percent usage of the CPU and that is about it.  No dropouts or 
problems from having an AMD CPU.

Maybe it was your motherboard?
