I returned to amateur radio a year ago, after a 35 year absence. Now am
trying to get some experience with PSK and FSK. I have a couple of
beginner's questions regarding digimodes on my Flex 1K.

Question 1: How to get the MixW audio from a DIFFERENT computer to
transmit on the Flex system?

The Flex manual has good instructions how to set up VAC on the same
computer, but my MixW is running on a different computer.

I hooked the MixW audio output wire to the unused MIC IN plug on the M44
card, which is the opposite stereo channel. But Flex would not transmit
this audio in any mode. Next, I moved my mic wire from the microphone to
the MixW audio, and set the audio level same as with the mic. Now the rig
will transmit my MixW tones on phone modes, but nothing is transmitted when
I set Flex to DigiU or DigiL. I set a special transmit profile where the
transmit filter width is 4 Khz and all mic processing is off. It seems to
work ok and I had my first ever digital QSO sending PSK31 as USB phone on
14.070+. I received a good report. MixW owns this second sound card, so
there is no danger of transmitting other computer sounds as USB outside of
the legal phone band.

Is there some better way to configure my setup, or is it perfectly normal to
be sending PSK as USB phone?

Question 2: What power level should I set on the Flex for PSK31 and FSK170?

Somebody warned me never to send PSK at full power, so I set the Flex power
to 40 watts.

Any comments or advice would be appreciated.
